Outgoing US president Donald Trump has designated Elad Roisman as acting chairman of US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) following the departure of Jay Clayton in December.

Elad Roisman was sworn in as a commissioner of the SEC in September 2018. Prior to joining the commission, he served as chief counsel on the US Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs.

He previously held positions as a counsel to SEC commissioner Dan Gallagher, as a chief counsel at NYSE Euronext and as an associate at the law firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy in New York.

The president tapped him for the top job at the agency on 28 December, shortly before Clayton stepped down from his leadership role after serving more than three-and-a-half years, making him one of its longest-serving chairs.

"I am humbled and honoured to serve as the acting chairman," Roisman says. "During the time I am in this role, I am fully committed to maintaining the steady course that chairman Clayton charted during his admirable tenure. I look forward to continuing to work with the incredible SEC staff and my fellow Commissioners as we steward this agency into the new year."

The timing of Clayton鈥檚 departure means his replacement will be among the first appointments made by the incoming president Joe Biden, who will enter The White House on 20 January.

No timeline has been given on when the next permanent agency chair will be announced.
